Tom Ford, a prestigious American fashion designer. He has extensive lines of clothing, accessories, sunglasses, perfumes and make-up. He dresses various celebrities and has them starring in and attending his fashion shows. But which stars does he choose to rub shoulders with?
With mentions by both Justin Timberlake and Jay-Z in their music, we ask is this just a public appreciation of Tom Fords fashion label or is there an alliance we don’t yet know about? It seems that the fashion designer’s alliance with the pop stars is based on more than mutual admiration.
A fashion crisis sparked the beginning of the JT and Tom Ford alliance. It seems that in his earlier days Justin Timberlake was in desperate need of some fashion advice. Not just any old fashion advice. He needed Tom Ford fashion advice. Gone were the days of cheesy denim on denim and the curly afro; in were the designer suits and the sleek, straight hair.
Tom Ford began dressing Timberlake in 2011 and it seems that he was somewhat flattered that the pop star came to him. During an interview with Guy Trebay for the New York Times about the evolution of JT’s style, Ford was quoted saying “When you’re someone in your early 50s, and a major global pop star who’s barely 30 identifies with your style and wants you to make all his clothes, you think, ‘I’m still valid.”
Not only did Ford point Justin in the right direction for day to day and red carpet fashion, he also worked closely with Timberlake and his team to create the refined style that featured on JT’s album The 20/20 Experience. As reported by the LA Times, the collaboration involved ‘made-to-measure tailoring, including eveningwear, suiting, shirting, ties, shoes and accessories that will be a focal point of The 20/20 Experience.”
The collaboration was not overlooked on Justin’s behalf as Tom Ford got a mention in one of the albums tracks featuring Jay Z, ‘Suit and Tie’. It’s not unheard of for music artists to name drop fashion labels or designers in their music records. Tom Ford went above and beyond. Not only did he get a mention in ‘Suit and Tie’ but he got a whole song named after him. Jay Z’s ‘Tom Ford’ was the second single from his Magna Carta Holy Grail album released in 2013.
In an interview with Jimmy Kimmel, it became apparent that the record came of no surprise to Tom Ford as he knew about the song before it was released. Despite announcing Jay-Z as a ‘great guy’ whom he trusted to use his name in a song, Tom Ford admits that he actually had to go on a rap translator to get to grips with the meaning of Jay Z’s record.
It seems that Tom Ford was flattered to have a record named after him as he declared it to be “a kind of validation of one’s work, as it means that one has really penetrated and made an impact on popular culture,” he said. His confesses his favorite lyric to be “‘I don’t pop Molly, I rock Tom Ford’ as he loves that idea that Jay Z gets a ‘high’ from my clothes.”
Tom Ford claims Jay Z, to be one of his brand’s biggest customers as he has been dressing the rap star for years. But it seems that Jay-Z wasn’t the only one to gain inspiration from their alliance. A piece in one of Tom Fords 2014 fashions shows was inspired by Jay-Z himself. Whilst on tour he wore a shirt with the designer’s name, year of birth and with ‘molly’ written but crossed out emblazoned on it. Tom Ford took inspiration from the shirt and created a chic sequined dress version of the shirt. The piece was unveiled as a “Knock off of the Knock off”.
So the next time we see Jay-Z or Justin Timberlake donning a Tom Ford suit on the red carpet or rocking a pair of Tom Ford sunglasses in the sun we won’t just assume that they both have great style, we’ll know the story behind the alliance of these three celebrities.
